Vestibular rehabilitation can be an effective way to improve symptoms related to many vestibular conditions. Vestibular conditions often present with symptoms including vertigo, dizziness, visual disturbance, and imbalance.
After a thorough vestibular evaluation, input from the patient, and review of diagnostic testing results, an exercise-based program can be designed by a Physiotherapist, to reduce vertigo, reduce dizziness, reduce gaze instability, and reduce imbalance or risk of fall.
Exercise regimens are based in three primary categories.
- Habituation Exercise - used to treat symptoms of dizziness that are produced because of visual stimuli.
- Gaze Stabilization - used to improve control of eye movements so vision can be clear during head movements.
- Balance Training - used to improve steadiness so that daily activities for self-care, work, and leisure can be performed successfully.
Finally, establishing a home exercise program is integral to the rehabilitation and recovery from vestibular disorders.
